Protect Conservationists from Being Attacked by Poachers

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Target: World citizens who are concerned about conservation issues

Goal: Show support for conservationists and park rangers who risk their lives to protect endangered species by donating to organizations that work to protect them.

Much attention has been given to illegal poaching of endangered species, but what often go overlooked are the lives of those who work tirelessly to protect these animals. The Thin Green Line, an organization that works to honor and protect park rangers and conservations, claims that as many as 13,000 conservationists and park rangers have been killed in the last eight years, with 80 percent of the deaths being classified as murders. These people risk their lives to protect species that many of us value, so we must support them in their noble efforts.

Conservationists are shot at, disfigured, and attacked with machetes by poachers, militias, drug smugglers and illegal loggers who put profit before the environment. These conflicts often occur in developing countries and areas prone to political unrest. Many rangers work without proper shelter, food, clean water, and security.

Notable deaths include conservationist Jane Tipson, who was murdered in an apparent contract killing in St. Lucia in 2003 for her work to prevent the construction of a dolphinarium. In March 2012, Kenyan Wildlife Services launched a search for a group of gangster poachers who murdered a man and a pregnant woman who were patrolling a private ranch in Taita. These are just a few of the thousands of lives lost in the war to protect endangered wildlife.

More awareness is needed about the incredible risks park rangers and conservationists must face each day. The most effective method to protecting these people is by donating to organizations that work to strengthen regulations and increase anti-poaching posts, such as the World Wildlife Fund, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, and The Thin Green Line. Please sign this petition to urge anyone who is concerned about our environment to show support for these noble people.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Concerned Citizens,

Most of us are well-aware of the many threats endangered species face from poachers, but what often go overlooked are the lives of those who work tirelessly to protect these animals. As many as 13,000 conservationists and park rangers have been killed in the last eight years, with 80 percent of the deaths being classified as murders.

Conservationists are shot at, disfigured, and attacked with machetes by poachers, militias, drug smugglers and illegal loggers who put profit before the environment. These conflicts often occur in developing countries and areas prone to political unrest. Many rangers work without proper shelter, food, clean water, and security.

The most effective method to protecting these people is by donating to organizations that work to strengthen regulations and increase anti-poaching posts, such as the World Wildlife Fund, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, and The Thin Green Line. Please show your support for the noble efforts of conservationists and park rangers by donating on their behalf today.

Sincerely,
