Investigate the Potential Penn State Cover-Up of Coach Sandusky’s Sexual Abuse

Target: Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly

Goal: Investigate the potential covering up of Coach Sandusky’s sexual abuse by officials at Penn State.

In 2011, Jerry Sandusky, the famous Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) football coach, was indicted for child molestation. Sandusky has been accused of molesting numerous children involved in his non-profit football program, and is currently on trial for ten such molestation accusations.

Numerous accusations, leveled primarily by boys between the ages of 10 and 15, detail a pattern of severe sexual abuse by Sandusky. In addition to the accusation of abuse by the children, Mike McQueary, an ex-assistant coach of Sandusky’s, witnessed the abuse; upon seeing the abuse, McQueary claims to have reported it to university administrators, yet they did nothing about it. While Sandusky has yet to be convicted, it appears very likely that he committed the crimes which he has been accused of and that there was a significant cover-up by his university.

Emails originating from Penn State officials appear to demonstrate not only a knowledge of abuse, but a concerted effort by school officials to cover up the heinous crimes of their employee. In their recently released communications, university administrators state that it wouldn’t have been “humane” to expose Sandusky, and seem to lack any regard for the victims of abuse. These emails indicate that school officials may have known about Sandusky’s abuse behavior as early as 2001, yet they did not report it or even remove Sandusky from his position allowing him access to children.

If the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal has taught us anything, it is that large organizations will sometimes cover up terrible crimes committed by one of their members; accountability must come from external groups, or it will likely never arrive. Please sign this petition to ask the Pennsylvania state attorney general to investigate this potential cover up and punish all who are proven responsible for covering up the sexual abuse of children.

Dear Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly,

This letter is being sent to you in regard to the potential cover-up of sexual abuse perpetrated by Pennsylvania State University. As you are already aware, Jerry Sandusky, an ex-coach at Penn State, is currently on trial for numerous counts of child sexual abuse. Throughout this scandal, two major questions have always been, “how much did the university know, and did they cover up the abuse?” Unfortunately, emails released during the course of the trial indicate that a cover-up was likely.

Internal Penn State emails appear to indicate that not only did Penn State officials know about the potential abuse, but that they covered it up and took no steps to prevent it in the future. For as long as a decade, Penn State officials may have been covering up the sexual abuse of children by Jerry Sandusky, thus exposing even more children to abuse.

Nobody knows whether this cover up was intentional or whether it was simply phenomenally bad judgment, but it is inarguable that an investigation should be launched into the Penn State cover-up. No organization should be allowed to cover the abuse of children and your office should immediately begin a full investigation into the administrators of Pennsylvania State University.

  1. This petition is superfluous, in that there are multiple ongoing investigations, State, Federal, and independent, which are the source of the claims re. such e-mails.

The Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is not going to launch a new and separate investigation that would duplicate that which has been ongoing.
