Applaud Governor for Protecting LGBTQ Rights

Target: North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper

Goal: Applaud executive order protecting LBGTQ rights in North Carolina.

Governor Roy Cooper has announced that he will soon issue an executive order that will increase LBGTQ protections in North Carolina. This decision stems from the recent legislation that repealed the controversial HB2 “bathroom bill.” Though HB2 was repealed, the legislation kept some elements of the bathroom bill and included a ban on passing anti-discrimination measures at the local level.

That legislation was seen as a compromise when Cooper signed it into law in March. Of that decision, Cooper said, “I had a choice. Do I continue to make a statement and pound the table and nothing happen? Or do I take a positive step, make progress and continue to fight?… I knew we had to make a step and that’s why I did it. It was the right thing to do. Diversity is our strength. North Carolina is a welcoming state ― we’ve just gotta make sure that our laws catch up with our people.”

Now Cooper has said, “I’m going to issue an executive order pretty soon that is comprehensive, that helps with LGBT protections, and we’re going to keep working every day.” Add your name to the petition below to let Governor Cooper know that you recognize and support the steps being taken to improving the situation for North Carolina’s LGBTQ community.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Cooper,

You recently announced that you plan to issue an executive order that will increase protections for the LGBTQ community in North Carolina. Since the passage and partial repeal of the HB2 “bathroom bill,” your state has been criticized for passing legislation that makes it easier to discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Your speaking out against HB2 and promising to better protect LBGTQ citizens of North Carolina in the future sends an important message to legislators in your state and across the country that discrimination against these and other minority groups will not be tolerated. This executive order is an important step toward undoing the damage that HB2 and the compromise repeal bill did in North Carolina.

I want to sincerely thank you for making plans to issue an executive order regarding LGBTQ protections. I also ask that you continue to work toward making North Carolina a safer and more inclusive place for underrepresented groups.

Sincerely,
