Demand School Drop Racially Biased Hairstyle Ban

Target: Neil Kinnon, Chairman of the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School

Goal: Demand school drop policy against African-American hairstyles.

The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Massachusetts has reportedly been marching black and biracial students down the halls to inspect their hair, punishing those who wore box braids with detention or suspension. This is not the first time this school has come down on black students for wearing cultural hairstyles; girls in the past have also been punished for wearing afros. The school claims that the policy extends to all students to promote “equality,” yet it is primarily black girls who are being punished.

For such a racially prejudiced and biased rule to even exist in this era is a travesty. There is no valid reason for such a ban on hairstyles — box braids and afros are hardly offensive or edgy statements. They are a part of black culture, and these girls have every right to proudly display them.

In today’s social climate, we cannot afford to allow any ridiculous rules to police the way students choose to express themselves, especially rules that affect a certain race or culture specifically. Sign this petition to demand the school issue a public apology to the unfairly punished students and abandon this rule immediately.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Kinnon,

Your school has allegedly been punishing black students for wearing box braids, despite the hairstyle being inoffensive and part of their culture. The claim that the rule against these braids affects all students does not mean much when it is solely black girls who have been affected by it, especially after you reportedly marched black and biracial students down the hall for inspections and punished those who “failed.”

Your rule is completely unnecessary. You claim to promote “equality” among students, but in reality, trying to encourage a homogeneous environment is more harmful than helpful. It discourages students from expressing their culture proudly, and sends the message that it is wrong to deviate from Eurocentric beauty standards in any way.

Abandon this rule immediately and apologize to the students you have wrongfully punished. Equality should not come at the expense of diversity and cultural acceptance.

Sincerely,

  1. This is absurd! What’s wrong with these people1?? They run a school?!

  2. Marching black and biracial students down the halls to inspect their hair, punishing those who wore box braids with detention or suspension? My God, whats wrong with those grownups?

Black people are beautiful humans and it’s their rights to ware and style them self’s as long as they are decent dressed and care for their hygiene in everyone’s best of health.

I think it’s time for the accountable at the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Massachusetts to grow up and focus on a more thorough and timely curriculum to ensure all students’ opportunity for a good future. Do not complicate your study time further with naively trivial pursuits for the already charged students.
