Justice for Disabled Man Allegedly Beaten by Police and Forced to Make Fake Statement

Target: Vanita Gupta, Head of the Justice Department of Civil Rights Division

Goal: Fire and punish police who allegedly beat a disabled African American man and forced his wife to make a false witness report.

Police officers reportedly barged into a couple’s home without mentioning a warrant and beat a disabled African American man, who they cursed at, handcuffed, choked, and threw down the stairs. The poor man was only in his underwear when, according to a lawsuit filed by the ACLU, police allegedly dragged him out to their vehicle and beat him in the head and chest. The officers allegedly demanded that the victim’s wife write a false statement stating that she witnessed a nearby burglary take place, but the woman says she didn’t see anything. The couple were still forced to write false statements.

The victim’s wife recorded part of the event. The officer can be seen grabbing the disabled man while threatening the couple with jail time if they don’t write the statements. The victim can then be heard yelling out in pain and saying “please, please, officer!”

This is just one of many similar cases this police department has against them. The ACLU filed a federal class-action lawsuit against the Madison County Sheriff’s Department this week. Sheriff Randy Tucker, along with six unnamed officers, face accusations of wrongdoing. The lawsuit claims that harassment and excessive force and unconstitutional tactics targeting black people are frequently used by deputies. It would seem that this police department has become so out of control that they think they’re above the law. If something isn’t done, these police brutality crimes will only worsen. That’s why it’s important that we start putting pressure on authorities to stop tolerating this, starting with this case. Please sign this petition to demand that the officers involved be fired from working in a position of authority and harshly punished, if guilty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Gupta,

Police officer reportedly barged into the home of an African American couple and beat a disabled man while forcing his wife to fill out a false witness statement. The lawsuit states that the officers forced the woman to say she witnessed a burglary take place, but the victim says she didn’t.

This is a pathetic, disgusting example of the growing police brutality problem in Mississippi. A lawsuit brought against the Madison Police Department claims that police frequently use excessive force and unconstitutional tactics such as racial profiling. This appears to be an example of how the police operate in Madison. This must be stopped immediately, starting with this case. We, the undersigned, demand that the officers involved be fired and harshly punished if guilty of the allegations.

Sincerely,

  1. Widespread police corruption, brutality and their ability to commit crimes with impunity should raise the question: Is law enforcement a criminal organization?
