Protect Undocumented Immigrants and Their Families

Target: Assemblyman Anthony Rendon, Speaker of the California State Assembly

Goal: Protect undocumented immigrants and their families by permitting them legal representation.

Undocumented immigrant parents are being ripped away from their children and forced to live in squalid deportation centers, with neither lawyers nor due process to protect them.

As many as 42 percent of detained undocumented immigrants have children. Of those who are detained, as many as 62 percent are without lawyers.  Immigrants have died in the inhumane conditions of America’s deportation centers, leaving their children orphaned and alone.

With the Trump Administration rounding up undocumented immigrants by the hundreds, a majority of which have committed no serious or deadly crimes, these numbers are bound to grow. Sign the petition and support proposed legislation that would guarantee lawyers to those jailed in California’s detention centers, where as many as 15 percent of detainees are held.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Assemblyman Rendon,

As many as 62 percent of detained undocumented immigrants are without legal representation. They are forced into squalid living conditions, conditions that, without healthcare, have proven deadly. Their children, American citizens, have been left behind, orphaned.

Legal representation for these immigrants would protect their rights, their children, and their lives. I demand that you and your fellow assemblymen and women support Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed funding for legal representation for undocumented immigrants. California holds 15 percent of these detained immigrants. If California leads the way in protecting their rights, perhaps other states will follow.

Sincerely,

It is important that illegal immigrants are cared for as prisoners in prisons are cared for ie medical care, food and access to lawyers. It is also sad that they are separated from their families. However, they are criminals because they broke the law by entering the country illegally. If people can apply to enter legally and take their turn then others can too. Asylum seekers also need help. Do I sound harsh? With just over 52% of Americans in employment and people coming in to undercut their pay and throwing them out of work then I think that we need to relook at the immigration policies to help Americans first.
