Lawmaker Must Apologize for Dehumanizing Gay People

Target: Rick Brattin, Representative from Missouri

Goal: Demand an apology and retraction from Republican representative Rick Brattin, who implied that gay people were not human beings.

Recently, Representative Rick Brattin said that there was a difference between being gay and being a human being. This statement was highly offensive to many in the LGBTQ community, and should not be encouraged or tolerated, especially coming from someone in a position of power. The remark was made during discussion of Senate Bill 43, which would protect people from discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

The LGBTQ community has seen its share of struggles and fought for everything they have. After decades of hard work, protests, and attempts to increase visibility, LGBTQ people can now get married and in most places be accepted. Unfortunately, workplace discrimination is still all too common, as is housing discrimination. In Missouri it’s perfectly legal to fire someone for their sexual orientation. These attitudes and the concerns of the religious right about “religious liberty” are directly causing harm to far too many people. Sign this petition to demand an apology and retraction from Rick Brattin for this hateful remark.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Brattin,

Your recent comments on homosexuality were both cruel and unacceptable. The majority of Americans support same-sex couples and it looks like public opinion is only going to become more and more favorable towards the LGBTQ community. No one should be discriminated against for who they are, regardless of someone else’s personal religious beliefs. There is nothing in the Bible prohibiting renting a home to a gay person, nor is there anything preventing a Christian employer from having gay employees.

The fight for LGBTQ rights is just part of the greater worldwide struggle for human rights. People are divided over race, nationality, gender and sexual orientation but none of these things are a choice and none are morally wrong. The concerns about religious liberty are not valid in this situation. No one is being forced into a same-sex relationship for themselves — we all just need to learn to accept diversity. Please retract and apologize for your statement that implied gay people are not fully human.

Sincerely,
