Stop Endangering Our Health With Excess Pollution

Target: Wendy Cleland-Hamnett, Acting Assistant Administator of the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Goal: Stop underestimating dangerous amounts of pollution released into the environment.

New research indicates that current government lab tests grossly underestimate the amount of pollution emitted from diesel-powered vehicles. These tests are routinely given to new vehicles before they are sold to ensure they meet the limits for nitrogen oxide, but globally the same cars, trucks, and buses that were tested are giving off over 50 percent more pollution on the road than in the lab.

The lab tests indicated that these vehicles spew 9.4 million tons of pollutants, but this research shows an extra 5 million tons that have been unaccounted for. This is bad enough for the environment in the long term, but the research estimates that this extra pollution contributed to another 38,000 deaths caused by soot and smog in 2015. Experts do not accuse car and truck companies of cheating on the tests, but put it down to the tests themselves failing to simulate real-world conditions. Demand that the tests be revamped to improve their accuracy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Acting Asst. Administrator Cleland-Hamnett,

The failure of government tests to accurately assess pollution levels from diesel powered vehicles is unacceptable. Research shows that globally, these vehicles are spewing over 50 percent more pollutants when they’re on the road than the tests determined. Experts say this is due to the tests failing to simulate real-world conditions.

This extra pollution is extremely dangerous. It contributed to an estimated 38,000 more deaths from soot and smog in 2015. It is your responsibility to protect our country — its land and its citizens — from this sort of threat. I urge you to overhaul these government tests in order to more accurately assess diesel emissions.

Sincerely,

we got the noise pollution, we got the toxic pollution, and now we got pollution everywhere!

    • Waiting for the day, when a Ban is put towards the Modified Mufflers, that rumble the floors, wake you in your sleep, and when you’re sick!!. Idiots that care less about anyone else!!

  2. TOXIC POLLUTION MUST BE STOPPED NOW! OTHERWISE WE WILL ALL BE WEARIN MASKS SOON!

  3. What a shame not many people see this as a serious threat to our health and well being; maybe that’s why a majority of them drive like maniacs? They don’t realize the bad air that’s affecting them!!! Well I do and I’m sick of holding my breath before I can get around these road hogs! We have enough commercial diesel vehicles to comply with already, so we should start with a ban on personal diesel powered monster pick up trucks none of us really need!! They’re the bullies of the highways and have to be ahead of everyone forcing them to choke on their diesel exhaust!!!
