Don’t Host Circus That Allegedly Beats Its Animals

Target: Douglas Podiak, Director of Lucas County Recreation

Goal: Stop the Lucas County Recreation Center from hosting Garden Bros. Circus unless it performs without its animal acts.

Despite an extensive list of Animal Welfare Act (AWA) violations, Garden Bros. Circus is still scheduled to be hosted by the Lucas County Recreation Center in Ohio. These troubling violations include citations for failure to provide veterinary care for open wounds on a camel’s leg and for a sheep’s fractured leg. In addition, Zachary Garden, the manager of Garden Bros. Circus, allegedly beats his animals, withholds food from them, and forces injured animals to perform. Garden Bros. Circus currently exhibits its elephants through Carson & Barnes Circus, which is also notorious for abuse and neglect. Carson & Barnes’ head trainer was caught on tape beating his elephants with bullhooks and shocking them with electric prods while the animals screamed and yelped in pain.

It is time to stop supporting this cruel form of entertainment and show Garden Bros. Circus the public doesn’t want to see wild animals suffering any longer. Sign this petition and demand Lucas County recreation Center cancel its plans with Garden Bros. Circus unless it performs without its animal acts.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Podiak,

The Lucas County Recreation Center is planning on hosting Garden Bros. Circus despite its bad reputation in regards to animal welfare. No animal should suffer for human entertainment. It is time to stop supporting this unnecessary cruelty.

Garden Bros. Circus appears to neither respect its animals nor care about their well-being. The circus has been cited for violations of the Animal Welfare Act over numerous issues including failing to provide proper veterinary care for injured animals. In addition, Garden Bros. Circus currently exhibits its elephants through Carson & Barnes Circus, which has also been accused of animal abuse. The head trainer was caught on tape beating his elephants with bullhooks and shocking them with electric prods as they screamed in pain.

Please consider canceling your plans with Garden Bros. Circus unless the company agrees to perform without its animal acts. These animals belong in the wild, not in crowded arenas performing ridiculous tricks for humans.

Sincerely,

[your Name Here]

The OBVIOUS SOLUTION WOULD BE TO SHUT DOWN THIS ABUSIVE CIRCUS PERMANENTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Paula Eggleston says:

Douglas Podiak, Please join so many other counties and states that have banned circuses that use live animal acts. It has been proven over and over that these animals are “trained” using highly abusive and painful methods. Not only is it a horrible way for these animals to exist but is also a danger to the public as these stressed animals often snap under the horrific conditions and cause injury to children and parents. These abused animal acts also send the wrong message to our children that this type of entertainment is ok in our society…hopefully you will agree that this type of circus holds no place in your county and will cancel in favor of another kind of family friendly entertainment.
    Thank you

    • You’re right – abuse by circuses has been repeatedly proven. This information is not just rumors or allegations – it is fact.
Why people would willingly participate in such abuse – and in doing so, teach children it’s ok to abuse animals – is unfathomable.

  3. Douglas Podiak, Director of Lucas County Recreation – what are you THINKING!!??? Or are you?? Just thinking of the money I guess. Disgusting!!

  4. Animals with 4 paws need to be taken asap for a sanctuary a proper one and beasts with 2 paws needs to go to forced work, where they also enjoy the treatment they were given to 4 paws animals. This would be pure good justice.

  5. DUMP THE GARDEN BROS CIRCUS THAT BEATS ITS ANIMAL NOW.
