Target: Gov. Georgy Poltavchenko of St. Petersburg

Goal: Allow gay community to hold Pride event next month without interference from the government.

In Russia, certain cities and regions including St. Petersburg introduced laws that ban “propaganda of homosexualism, sodomy and lesbianism among minors.” It is time for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens in St. Petersburg to have the same rights as everyone else. Sign this petition, telling the Governor of St. Petersburg to allow a Gay Pride event planned for next month to be held without interference.

Last month, a dozen LGBT activists were detained for attempting to gather outside the City Council and Mayor’s office, while another group was allowed to gather in the same spot for at least an hour protesting and shouting homophobic slogans. Only the people in that group who attempted to attack LGBT activists were arrested, while LGBT activists were arrested for holding rainbow flags. LGBT citizens continue to face discrimination and lack of rights in Russia. In St. Petersburg, there are laws that ban “propaganda of homosexualism, sodomy and lesbianism among minors.”

These laws should be removed and LGBT citizens in St. Petersburg should not have to fight for basic rights. Everyone deserves freedom of speech and in St. Petersburg, LGBT activists should be allowed to hold a Pride event planned for July 7. Sign this petition, asking Gov. Georgy Poltavchenko to allow the Pride event to be held without interference from the government.

PETITION LETTER:

Gov. Georgy Poltavchenko,

Last month, a dozen lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activists were detained for attempting to gather outside the City Council and Mayor’s office, while another group was allowed to gather in the same spot for at least an hour protesting and shouting homophobic slogans. Only the people in that group who attempted to attack LGBT activists were arrested, but LGBT activists were arrested for holding rainbow flags. I am writing asking you to help stop this unfair treatment of LGBT citizens.

LGBT citizens continue to face discrimination and lack of rights in Russia. In St. Petersburg, there are laws that ban “propaganda of homosexualism, sodomy and lesbianism among minors.” A Pride event is scheduled for next month, July 7, and it should be held without interference by the government. I am asking you to make sure LGBT citizens receive the same rights as others and the Pride event next month is not stopped.

Sincerely,
