Applaud Former Exxon CEO for Admitting Climate Change is a Serious Threat

Target: Rex Tillerson, United States Secretary of State

Goal: Commend the former Exxon CEO for signing a multinational declaration which affirms that climate change is a serious threat that must be combated.

Despite the fact that the Trump administration has called for budget cutbacks on climate research and has slashed environmental regulations, a small glimmer of hope may be found in a document the United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has recently signed. The so-called Fairbanks Declaration was signed by eight members of the Arctic Council, including fellow nations such as Finland and Canada, and calls for all nations to “note with concern the widespread impact of climate change.” The declaration also calls for implementation of the Paris Agreement, which President Trump promised to exit during his campaign.

Tillerson has a mixed past when it comes to environmental policy. As former CEO of Exxon, he headed one of the world’s leading fossil fuel corporations, which likely contributed to the acceleration global warming. In 2010, Tillerson acknowledged that humans were likely a factor in climate change, yet declined to say that human activity was the primary cause. As an advisor to Trump, he has called for the implementation of a carbon tax and has urged the president to remain in the Paris Agreement or risk ceding diplomatic power to the European Union and China.

While Tillerson still may not be the strongest environmental advocate, and the Arctic Council only has the power to issue advisories such as this declaration, this is still a step in the right direction. Sign this petition to thank Tillerson for his participation, and to demand that he continue to urge Trump to keep the U.S. in the Paris Agreement.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Tillerson,

I am writing to praise your important decision to sign a declaration stating that climate change poses a serious threat at the recent meeting of the Arctic Council. In doing so, you have sent a signal that this nation will still take part in climate change discussions and is committed to seeking solutions.

While President Trump is unlikely to be moved in his unfounded opinion that climate change is a hoax, you do have the opportunity to influence his decisions on important climate change related global policies, such as the Paris Agreement. In order to fulfill the advisory set out by the declaration you have signed, I urge you to continue to put pressure on him to remain in this vital agreement, for the sake of the planet and for the sake of the United States’ ability to remain a major player on the world’s stage.

Sincerely,
