Protect Environmental Preserves From Attacks By Trump Administration

Target: Ryan Zinke, Interior Department Secretary

Goal: Protect the Cape Cod National Seashore and the commission that oversees it.

The Trump administration has ordered the Cape Cod National Seashore’s local commission to suspend meetings indefinitely. The National Seashore is a 40-mile stretch of land between Chatham and Provincetown, founded as an environmental preserve in 1961. Since its founding, the commission has never been asked to suspend meetings.

The commission includes town, country, and state representatives, as well as representatives from the U.S. Interior Department. The sudden order has made members of the commission concerned that the Trump administration may do away with it entirely, or replace important local voices on the panel.

The Trump administration has already made clear that environmental preservation efforts, like those of the Seashore commission, are not considered important to this White House. Trump recently proposed huge budget cuts for the Environmental Protection Agency, and also ordered a review of national monuments named by former presidents. This new order affects not only the Cape Cod National Seashore, but 200 other advisory boards across the United States as well.

Add your name to the petition below to demand that the Trump administration protect the Cape Cod National Seashore and other areas of environmental importance.

Dear Secretary Zinke,

The Trump administration recently ordered the commission that oversees the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts to suspend its meetings indefinitely. This is unprecedented in the 56-year-long history of the commission and the Seashore itself.

Considering the Trump administration’s recent attacks on the Environmental Protection Agencies and national monuments, the order to suspend meetings is cause for significant concern among the members of the Seashore commission and members of the 200 similar panels that this new order affects nationwide.

The preservation and conservation efforts overseen by the National Seashore commission are very important to Cape Cod residents. I strongly urge you to reverse the order that the Trump administration issued halting the meetings of this important panel and others like it across the country. Environmental welfare and preservation of important natural areas should be top priorities for the Trump White House, and so far, this administration has shown a dangerous lack of concern for environmental protection. I insist that you reverse this pattern in your work at the Interior Department.
