Tell Shriners International to Stop Funding Cruel Animal Experiments

Target:  Shriners International

Goal:  End cruel burn experiments on animals.

Shriners International has extensively funded cruel burn experiments on animals for over 30 years. The experiments have been taking place at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). Dogs, sheep, mice and pigs are subject to third-degree burns covering as much as 40 percent of their bodies before they are no longer of use to the experiments and killed.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was aided by a UTMB insider and gained documentation through a Freedom of Information Act request to uncover that UTMB failed to provide pain relief to at least one sheep that had been intentionally burned on over 20 percent of her body.

The cruel experiments are conducted with scorching-hot metal rods or the open flame of a Bunsen burner. Some of the animals are forced to inhale smoke in some experiments to gauge how much damage smoke inhalation will do to the lining of the respiratory tract.

Other animals in the laboratories of UTMB have been subjected to other horrifying experiments. One dog died after it was cut open and had a tube implanted in its colon. That dog died during surgery. Another died in pain after a procedure when it was not given post-operative painkillers. Spinal cord injuries and nerve damage has been tested on sheep. Mice have suffered from dehydration and monkeys have been isolated from social contact with other monkeys.

After these experiments take place and the animals have been tortured, abused and mutilated they are killed to make room for a new batch of animals.

Stand up for the rights of these animals by urging Shriners International to stop funding these cruel experiments. Add your voice to the petition below.

Dear Shriners International,

Please stop funding cruel burn experiments at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. These experiments have been almost exclusively funded by your organization for more than 30 years. In these experiments pigs, sheep, mice and other animals are subject to painful third-degree burns that cover as much as 40 percent of their bodies.

In the experiments, defenseless animals are burned with hot metal rods or the open flame of a Bunsen burner. Often the animals are not given pain relief. Rampant documentation shows the violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act in the university’s laboratories.

Please stop funding the cruel torture of animals that is taking place at UTMB.

  1. Suzanne Sheldon says:

Expose all their practices, not just the good ones. No more tolerance of animal torture. If they want to volunteer for these experiments, that’s OK.

  2. Carrie Burton says:

    Despicable behavior!

  3. Pamela Wolfe says:

Shriners are hypocrites if they support this !!

  4. Pamela Wolfe says:

Any “experiment” that hasn’t produced a result after 30 years is not a valid experiment – it’s just an excuse to get funding !! If a result (information which can be used) has been obtained, then it should be documented and the information made available to be used. Further experimentation is therefore unnecessary and cannot be justified! This must be stopped !!

  5. Peter Noone says:

I think Pamela Wolfe should do everything she can to help the animals in France where she lives but she has never lived in the USA and her opinions regarding what happens in the USA is irrelevant. I know she means well but she should stop meddling in US politics.

  6. Cat Jefferson says:

This sick, inhumane treatment of animals has got to stop. Burns are the most painful of injuries to endure., and there is no reason to continue this at all!
