End Suicides and Murders Caused by Gun Violence

Target: State Representative Tina Kotek, Oregon House of Representatives

Goal: Bring an end to the alarming rates of suicides and murders caused by gun violence.

Gun violence may soon be brought to an end by proposed new legislation that strives to decrease the amount of suicides and homicides carried out by firearms. This legislation, passed by the state’s Senate, will allow family members to take guns away from loved ones if they feel that loved one may severely hurt themselves or someone else.

Suicides by guns are an extremely troubling occurrence in Oregon. About 77 percent of gun deaths in the state are suicides. Young teens and veterans compose a large portion of this percentage. If family members have legal authority to take firearms away, a great many lives may be saved.

The NRA is fighting against this bipartisan bill, despite that fact that hundreds of lives per year can be spared. Sign the petition and ask the state’s House of Representatives to pass this legislation and help bring an end to suicides and murders caused by gun violence.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Kotek,

The Senate has recently passed bipartisan legislation that will give family members the right to take firearms away from loved ones if they fear that individual will cause harm to themselves or someone else. If this bill becomes law, hundreds of lives may be saved.

Suicide makes up well over a majority of gun deaths in Oregon. This law will help families protect loved ones. I ask that you and others in the House of Representatives do everything in your power to ensure that this bill is passed and that suicides and homicides by gun violence be brought to an end.

Sincerely,

  1. Not signing this petition. Taking guns away from suicidal people is just a stop-gap measure – not a gun-control issue. To kill oneself, one doesn’t have to do it with a gun. Also if someone wants to hurt others, they don’t necessarily need a gun. Should we ban knives also?
If a nation is going to ban guns and be consistent, then it must ban guns in the police force as well.
The whole issue of gun control is not really about PROTECTING people. It’s about CONTROL – CONTROL of the citizens by government.
