Protest Exclusion of Women From Senate Health Care Group

Target: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

Goal: Include women in the all-male Senate group tasked with drafting a new healthcare bill

The group of Republican senators that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has asked to draft a new version of the House’s recent healthcare bill consists entirely of male senators. The GOP has five women in the Senate, but the group of 13 senators who will play the largest role in the latest attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare has zero women.

When the House recently passed its repeal-and-replace bill, the legislation was met with harsh public criticism. Among the bill’s many issues, including removing important pre-existing condition protections, was the way it would have threatened the health of American women if it were signed into law. Among the pre-existing conditions that could cost patients more for health insurance under the House bill were: having ever been pregnant, having ever had a C-section, having ever been the victim of sexual assault, and having ever been the victim of domestic abuse. The bill also aimed to defund Planned Parenthood, which provides reproductive and preventative healthcare to millions of American women.

The House bill showed a distinct lack of concern for women’s health, and Senate Republicans are showing a similar lack of concern by not bringing a single woman into this group in their attempt to craft a healthcare bill of their own. Add your name to the petition below to demand the GOP incorporate female senators in the creation of this new bill.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator McConnell,

You recently asked a group of 13 GOP senators to work on drafting a healthcare bill following the House’s passage of their repeal-and-replace legislation. However, not a single female GOP senator has a place in this group, despite the fact that the Senate’s healthcare bill, if signed into law, will affect coverage for American men and women alike.

Considering the degree to which the House bill threatened the health of American women, it is even more important that the Senate consider input from women when drafting its healthcare legislation. By leaving decisions that will affect men and women in the United States to men alone, you are doing an inexcusable disservice not only to the women who elected you to the Senate, but to all American women.

I strongly urge you to expand this group of senators to include female voices. Exclusively male clusters should not be making legal decisions that will affect women’s health.

Sincerely,

Heck with that, I protest the fact that there IS a senate health care plan!! They should get what WE get.

Oh nvm… the title of this needs to be reworded, it’s misleading. No women on the COMMITTEE.

Agree 100%, and they should pay for them out of their pockets, not our taxes. And they should have term limits, too many entrenched politicians who have been around way past their expiration dates pocketing lobbyist cash to turn a blind eye to their constituents.

If the public has anything to say about it, Congress will have the same healthcare as the rest of us. So — watch what you write!
