Stop Skirting Environmental Regulations by Exporting Garbage

Target: Scott Pruitt, Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency

Goal: End practice of exporting garbage discarded by Americans to other countries for disposal.

The United States produces over 250 million tons of garbage each year. As debris has overwhelmed domestic disposal sites, waste management companies have adopted the practice of exporting trash to developing countries with weak environmental regulations.

Over 40 million tons of garbage was exported by the United States in 2012 alone. Countries such as China, the Philippines, and Thailand provide a lucrative option for waste disposal. However, as significant profits are realized for companies on both sides, public and ecological health is threatened. Residents of areas where waste is processed are frequently exposed to toxic chemicals through contaminated air and waterways.

Garbage which cannot be recycled or stripped for profit commonly winds up in the ocean. This has fueled the creation of state-sized floating garbage patches which threaten marine life. The largest patch, known as the ‘Great Pacific,’ is visible from space and covers an area larger than the state of Texas.

It is time that we started taking responsibility for the waste produced in America. There is no incentive to change the cultural norms which promote materialism and excess, if the results are simply shipped out of view. Please sign the below petition calling for a ban on garbage exportation to other countries.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Administrator Pruitt,

I am writing to urge that garbage exportation be banned in the United States. Over 40 million tons of garbage is shipped to other countries each year. This has exposed residents to toxic chemicals through improper disposal practices, and fueled creation of a floating garbage patch larger than your home state of Oklahoma.

We cannot continue to vacate responsibility for the waste produced in America. Please send a strong message to the rest of the world of our commitment to accountability in ending this practice.

Sincerely,

  1. America should be thoroughly ashamed of itself for irresponsibly shipping it’s garbage to other countries, where it endangers the health and lives of people and animals, as well as the environment. Thanks a bunch, America!

  2. MUST RECYCLE FOR EARTH NOW.
