Don’t Let Michigan Pass the Most Restrictive Abortion Law in the United States.

Pro-Choice-1

Target: The Michigan State Legislature and Governor Rick Snyder

Goal: Don’t let Michigan pass the most stringent abortion restrictions in the country.

The Michigan legislature is currently in the process of passing the most restrictive set of abortion restrictions in the entire country. This set of restrictions, which just passed out of a house committee and could be signed into law in a matter of weeks, is a very real danger to women across the state of Michigan.

In its current form, this bill will put numerous and onerous restrictions on both abortion providers and women seeking to exercise their right to control their own bodies. Among other thing, this bill will do the following:

  1. All abortions – without exceptions for rape/incest, health of the mother, or fetal disabilities – would be banned past 20 weeks of development.
  2. Emergency contraceptive pills and abortive medicines would need to be prescribed in person rather than over the phone.
  3. Women seeking an abortion would need to be evaluated for “coercion” before obtaining an abortion.
  4. Even in cases where the abortion is not surgical, a doctor with a full surgical room would be required to perform an abortion – as many abortion providers don’t do surgical abortions, this would likely shut these providers down for lack of proper accommodations.
  5. Regulations regarding the disposal of fetal remains would be tightened, making it more expensive for surgical abortion providers to dispose of medical waste.

If this bill is signed into law, Michigan would become the state with the harshest abortion restrictions in the country and would likely become a state where abortions are virtually impossible to obtain. Regardless of whether one agrees with abortion as an ethical issue, it is a right guaranteed to women under Roe v. Wade. Women’s reproductive freedoms are a matter of personal choice for the woman in question, and such a restrictive law will inevitably infringe on the right of women to control their own bodies.

Numerous pro-choice and medical organizations have decried this bill. Dr. Timothy Johnson, the chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department for the University of Michigan, testified at the house hearing for this bill and registered serious concerns that this bill may endanger women’s health. Because there are no medical exceptions in this bill, it is likely that some women will suffer severe complications stemming from the inability to abort a hopeless pregnancy.

This petition is directed at the Michigan state legislature as well as Governor Rick Snyder and is intended to convince them to not sign this anti-reproductive freedom bill. This bill is not only a serious infringement on the rights of women to make choices regarding their own bodies, but it is also very dangerous to the health of women.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Michigan State Legislature and Governor Rick Snyder,

You are currently facing a very important choice regarding the fate of women’s reproductive freedom in the state of Michigan. A package of abortion restrictions is in consideration by the state legislature and may be up for final signature by the governor as soon as next week.

This bill will place numerous restrictions on women seeking abortions as well as the ability of abortion providers to operate in the state of Michigan. Among the changes to abortion law contained in this legislative initiative, three elements are particularly troubling:

  1. All abortions – without exceptions for rape/incest, health of the mother, or fetal disabilities – would be banned past 20 weeks of development.
  2. Women seeking an abortion would need to be evaluated for “coercion” before obtaining an abortion.
  3. Even in cases where the abortion is not surgical, a doctor a full surgical room would be required to perform an abortion – as many abortion providers don’t do surgical abortions, this would likely shut these providers down for lack of proper accommodations

If it passes, this bill would make Michigan the state with the most stringent abortion restrictions in the entire United States; many abortion providers will be unable to comply with the new laws and will simply shut down, thus reducing the ability of Michigan women to access abortion services. The accessibility and quality of women’s health in the state of Michigan is under a very serious threat by this law.

I, as well as everybody else to sign this petition, implore you to fight this legislative encroachment on the rights of women. Do everything in your power to stop this set of restrictions from passing. Abortion is a matter of personal choice, and government intrusions into the doctor’s offices of women across Michigan should not be signed into law.

Sincerely,

  1. There is no sane or logical reason behind pro-life legislation. It is based on moral, religious and personal beliefs. There is no room in a free and democratic society for that. Pro-life legislation would kill way more life than it would save. And that is not my opinion. That’s a FACT.

  2. This is getting ridiculous. And in the ‘land of the free’, for crying out loud.

  3. Don’t steal – that law is also based on personal and religious beliefs. Is there no room for this law is free society as well.
