Don’t Jail Protester for Laughing at Attorney General

Target: Rod Rosenstein, U.S. Deputy Attorney General

Goal: Drop charges against a woman who laughed at the confirmation hearing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

A woman is facing jail time for laughing during the confirmation hearing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, after a colleague claimed that Sessions’ history of “treating all Americans equally under the law is clear and well-documented.” This was referring to the same man deemed too racist to serve as a federal judge in 1986 for stating, among other things, that the Ku Klux Klan “was okay until I found out they smoked pot.” Sessions is also on record criticizing the Voting Rights Act that prohibits racial discrimination in voting and hate crime laws that protect LGBTQ individuals.

For these reasons, when Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama stated that Sessions has a clear history of treating all Americans equally, Desiree Fairooz understandably laughed, and was promptly removed from the chamber by security guards. She has been convicted of “disorderly and disruptive conduct,” and Fairooz now faces a fine of up to $500 and as much as six months in jail. Sign this petition to demand she face no punishment for the mere reflex of laughter in the face of such a brazenly false comment to preserve the fairness and impartiality of the justice system.

Dear Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein,

In yet another dystopian turn of events in the days of the Trump administration, a woman is facing jail time just for laughing during the confirmation of your boss Jeff Sessions. After hearing Senator Richard Shelby claim that Sessions’ history of “treating all Americans equally under the law is clear and well-documented,” Fairooz understandably chuckled, given that the now-Attorney General has a reputation for denying the rights of immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, and minorities, and has voiced support for the Ku Klux Klan.

For this act, she has been convicted by the same Department of Justice that Sessions now heads, and faces up to six months in jail and fines for her snicker at the Attorney General. I urge you to ensure Fairooz does not face serious punishment in order to preserve the confidence of the American people in the fairness and impartiality that the justice system is supposed to uphold.

  1. The idiot that laughed should be embarrassed at his childish and ignorant behavior. Americans are sick and tired of protesters acting like fools and interfering with anything they don’t like. Be productive instead of destructive. Help make the country great instead of tearing it down because you don’t get your way. Mature up at little.

I think you are the one who needs to grow up. Apparently you still haven’t got a clue about where this country is headed.

    • Maureen Downs says:

Are you kidding with Trump in charge the entire world is laughing at the USA

  3. Rosslyn Osborne says:

I don’t come from your country, but after reading some of these comments I’m surprised that the entire gathering didn’t join in the laughter, or they were too stunned to react?
The people at home probably were in hysterics at such a claim.
Please don’t make her do the jail time as well, a fine is insult enough. Thanks.
