Demand Climate Change Promises are Fulfilled

Target: Emmanuel Macron, President-Elect of France

Goal: Tell the new president-elect of France he must honor campaign pledges to combat climate change and put pressure on nations who withdraw from the Paris Agreement.

French voters recently elected Emmanuel Macron, a former investment banker who has in recent years become a strong advocate for the environment. During his campaign, he pledged to welcome American scientists and climate change innovators to his country to continue their work and vowed to put pressure on nations planning to withdraw from the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Now that Macron has defeated his far-right opposition, many are hopeful that he will work to fulfill these promises.

Macron’s victory comes at a time when American scientists, researchers and sustainably minded entrepreneurs have felt under attack by the Trump administration. The Scott Pruitt-led EPA has dismissed scientists from its review boards, while the Trump budget threatens to undermine all research geared toward understanding climate change and its causes. Macron’s offer to welcome scientists and innovators into his nation may seem like a loss for the United States, yet with the specter of global warming posing a worldwide threat, the need for research and new ideas should take precedent over nationalism.

Macron’s other pledges to pressure fellow nations to work toward renewable energy as detailed in the Paris Agreement and to end all coal production in France by the year 2022 are just as important and should be made a priority. As Trump has considered withdrawing the United States from the agreement, it is possible that political pressure such as E.U. sanctions could influence his decision.

At a time when the United States has taken such a regressive stance and the U.K. may be softening their own environmental regulations, the world needs leaders such as Macron to push for a more sustainable future. Sign this petition to tell Macron that these campaign pledges must be fulfilled for the good of all.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President-Elect Macron,

Your campaign promises regarding climate change and the environment have inspired hope and optimism worldwide. The world needs leaders at this time, more than ever, who accept science as a reality, and who acknowledge that the threats of global warming must be taken seriously. Your pledges to place political pressure on fellow nations to remain in the Paris Agreement, to shut down coal-powered plants in France by the year 2022, and to extend an invitation to American climate scientists to come to France are all magnanimous goals which should be made a priority.

I urge you to do all that you can to work with the government of France to help ensure that these campaign promises are made a reality, for a brighter future for the world as a whole.

Sincerely,
