Punish Teacher Who Distributed Letter to Students Denying Rape Culture

Target: Carol Campbell, Principal of Grant High School in Portland, Oregon

Goal: Demand that a teacher be punished after distributing a self-written opinion piece to students that denied the existence of rape culture.

A teacher distributed a letter to students that denied the existence of rape culture. The letter claimed that because the teacher had not experienced rape culture himself, rape culture did not exist. Grant High School’s principal released a statement to parents stating, “The perspective of the teacher does not reflect nor support our approach to educating students on sexual assault.” Demand that this teacher be punished for his actions.

“Rape culture is a theoretical construct that is ill defined. What exactly is “rape culture’? I don’t see it in my life or the lives of any of the men and women I have known.” This controversial statement was taken from the teacher’s letter addressed to “esteemed students.” The teacher interrupted a class discussion of rape culture and gender to distribute the self-written material.

An opinion piece with very little context can be dangerously misunderstood among young students and should not have been distributed. Sign below and demand that this teacher be punished for his actions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Principal Campbell,

A teacher distributed a letter to students stating that rape culture does not exist. This material, when given to young students, could cause a dangerous misunderstanding of an important topic. We demand that this teacher be punished for his actions.

“The very wording of ‘rape culture’ seems to me a bit hysterical,” the teacher states in the controversial letter. He also writes that he finds rape culture “dubious” and invites students to discuss their thoughts with him. This document is dangerously one-sided and could significantly skew students’ understanding of rape and its overall impact.

This teacher was out of line and we demand that he receive an appropriate punishment.

Sincerely,

Some so-called “teachers” are just not meant to teach, and this is one of them! Hold this “teacher” accountable for denying the existence of rape!!! Ignorance at its Worst!!
