Protect Brazil’s Amazon from Deforestation

Target: Sarney Filho, Brazil’s Minister of the Environment

Goal: Don’t allow the Amazon to be destroyed by deforestation and a lack of transparency by outsourced, for-profit contractors.

The Amazon rainforest in Brazil may face increased deforestation should plans to outsource its protection to a for-profit contracting group reach fruition. Brazil’s government, which has long succeeded in combating deforestation, has fired its expert researcher, and has instead outsourced preservation. It’s willing to pay companies to protect the large swaths of rainforest.

Brazil has taken great strides in protecting its rainforests in recent years, cutting deforestation by more than 70 percent. However, the government organization that has been responsible for these improvements has seen its budget slashed in half. Now, the government is seeking to outsource rainforest protection.

By paying a company to study and combat deforestation, a lack of transparency will be present. How truthful can an organization, being paid by the government, be about a government duty? If the contractor is not transparent and truthful, deforestation will undoubtedly increase. Sign the petition and demand that deforestation be brought to an end and that the rainforest’s protection not be doled out to the lowest bidder.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Filho,

Although Brazil has made great strides in its protection of the fragile Amazon rainforest, that natural wonder’s existence is once again under threat. The government has not only fired one of its top researchers, but it is now bidding out the protection of the rainforest.

This will result in a lack of transparency that will be detrimental to the rainforest’s future. I ask that the government cancel its plans to bid out the rainforest’s protection and continue to end deforestation as it always has, with research and expertise by nonpartisan, transparent parties.

Sincerely,
