Target: Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) and Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.)
Goal: Don’t prevent the restoration of salmon populations in the San Joaquin River.
Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) and Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) are fighting hard to pass an amendment that would effectively wipe out the Salmon population in the San Joaquin River by denying badly needed funding. Those salmon are essential to the ecosystem, and their elimination would upset the fragile balance of the natural world. Their amendment shows little concern for the wildlife.
When the Friant Dam was finished in 1942, the result was devastatingly low water levels in the river. The water was being used for farming irrigation, but it ruined the salmon population and stopped local fisherman from being able to earn their livelihood. The farmers and the fisherman argued for years, but finally agreed on a plan to help the salmon. The amendment, which would alter the House Energy and Water appropriations bill, would take away the funding needed to restore the ecosystem.
Denham has also put a similar amendment on the House Commerce-Science-Justice appropriations bill, which would reinforce the budget away from restoration even further. These two men and their amendment are the epitome of business ruining the environment, motivated by private investors without taking notice of the negative impact they are having on the world around them.
Dear Rep. Don Young and Rep. Jeff Denham,
Reconsider your changes to the Energy and Water appropriations bill and the Commerce-Science-Justice appropriations bill. You are trying to pass amendments that would effectively wipe out the Salmon population in the San Joaquin River by diverting the budget elsewhere. Those salmon are essential to the ecosystem, and their elimination would be detrimental to society.
Without the salmon in the San Joaquin River, the entire balance of nature is thrown out of whack. The bears have nothing to eat, and the fisherman have nothing to catch and sell. So many lives depend on the salmon population, and you act as if it were a simple matter of money.
I urge you to retract your amendments. Consider the salmon, and restore the San Joaquin River’s ecosystem to the way it is supposed to be naturally.
