Target: California Fish and Game Commission
Goal: To show support of California’s new step in preserving shore habitats along its coast.
In Eureka, the Fish and Game Commission of California voted to instate a statewide system of Marine Protected Areas. This is the first statewide system of underwater parks in America. The landmark program could serve as an example, encouraging other states to follow suit by creating ocean conservation areas.
The decision to foster the preservation of key sea habitats has been in the planning stages for approximately eight years, and has been supported by conservationists, business owners, local fishermen, scientists, government officials, and other citizens concerned with the well-being of California’s oceans. The Marine Life Protection Act of 1999 allowed provisions for such a network of parks, but it has taken the hard work of all those involved to make it a reality.
There are currently three parks established in northern and central California, and the positive vote on this program will allow for many more. Because of this, fish and other marine wildlife, as well as underwater plant life, will be able to thrive. With the preservation of the marine areas, natural habitats will be safe, restoring natural ecosystems and ensuring the protection of California’s coast.
Dear California Fish and Game Commission,
Congratulations on your hard work with the statewide underwater park system! I fully support this program and the inevitable positive effects it will have on California and its coasts. I am eager to see how the work you have done will allow for other states to follow in your unprecedented footsteps.
This conservation effort will be monumental in the lives of marine wildlife, allowing them to grow and live naturally in their habitats without fear of damage from the human population. The ocean ecosystem greatly affects our ecosystem on land, so its preservation is essential to our survival as well. By protecting the ocean, you take steps to protect the lives of all living creatures.
For fighting this fight, I commend you. These underwater parks will serve as an encouraging example to other states and their coasts. I hope that this system will not only benefit California, but that it will benefit the nation and cause other states to work as you have to protect America’s coasts.
