White House: Explain Dismissal Of Chief Usher Angella Reid

Target: Donald Trump

Goal: Explain sudden firing of chief usher Angella Reid.

The White House recently fired Angella Reid, the first female and second African American chief usher. The chief usher is a top-ranking position in the White House residence, overseeing the large residence staff and taking on management, personal, and administrative tasks.

There have been only nine chief ushers since the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, chief ushers tend to hold the position for long periods of time. Reid joined the White House under the Obama administration. The White House offered no explanation or specific statement regarding the reasons behind Reid’s firing.

The dismissal of a chief usher is very unusual, especially doing so without offering an explanation to the public. The Trump White House is already known for being less than forthcoming regarding its relationship with the public and the press, and the known vein of misogyny and racism that runs through this administration makes the sudden firing of an African American woman more suspect. Add your name to the petition below to demand the Trump White House explain the sudden dismissal of Angella Reid.

Dear Mr. Trump,

Your White House recently fired Angella Reid, the chief usher of the White House residence. Ms. Reid was the first woman and second African American to hold this important position. She joined the White House under the administration of President Obama in 2011; her firing is unusual, considering the long tenure of most chief ushers, who tend to stay throughout several administrations. Only nine people have held the position since the beginning of the 20th century.

Even more unusual is the fact that your White House offered no specific statement or explanation for the dismissal of Ms. Reid. Given the fact that you are known for misogynist and racist comments and beliefs, as are several of the advisers and appointees you have chosen to include in your administration, the sudden and unexplained firing of a woman of color is a cause for public concern.

I strongly urge your administration to make a public statement regarding the dismissal of Ms. Reid. Your White House has, in a short time, already become known for the disrespect and disregard it shows to both women and people of color, and if there is a legitimate reason for firing the chief usher, the public should be made aware of it.
