Close Monkey Experiment Labs

Target: Pravind Jugnauth, prime minister of Mauritius

Goal: Ban laboratories that experiment on primates.

Lawmakers on the island nation of Mauritius recently approved a massive expansion of the country’s animal experimentation industry. With the approval of parliament, private businesses can now apply for licenses to conduct experiments on the island’s macaque population. Macaques are a group of monkeys that live all over the world, but are especially prevalent on Mauritius.

The government has justified opening the floodgates to animal experimentation by arguing it could be a massive economic boon for the country, which is already considered one of Africa’s most competitive economies. The decision may also have been the result of pressure from Mauritius’ five big monkey breeders, who in recent years have struggled to export their animals. Internationally, experimentation on primates has become increasingly controversial. Many western countries are becoming increasingly hesitant about experimenting on monkeys, and it’s even becoming hard to transport the animals. A number of major airlines have simply refused to carry Mauritius monkeys bound for international labs, prompting many in the industry to suggest the nation should simply open its own labs.

This effort to circumvent international outrage over primate experimentation hasn’t gone unnoticed by animal rights campaigners. The London-based Cruelty Free International has condemned the decision, and even a handful of lawmakers raised concerns over animal rights. One lawmaker, Rajesh Bhagwan, warned the industry could lack transparency, and pointed out it could even harm the bread and butter of the Mauritius economy: tourism. Meanwhile, another lawmaker, Paul Bérenger, urged the government to enforce European Union animal protections on the labs.

Sadly, much of this criticism has fallen on death ears, and the Mauritius government seems eager to press ahead with its plan to allow companies to experiment on its precious macaque population.

Let’s send a message to the government, and urge them to abandon this inhumane plan.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Pravind Jugnauth,

The Mauritius parliament recently approved a proposal to allow the distribution of licenses to private firms for primate experimentation. This would open the floodgates to experimentation on Mauritius’s macaque population. The macaques are among the most prized animals on the island, and are a massive source of tourism revenue. Turning Mauritius into a massive animal experimentation lab won’t just harm these macaques, but likewise has the potential to devastate the country’s reputation as an eco-tourism paradise.

We therefore urge you to repeal the decision to allow the expansion of the country’s primate experimentation industry. Experimenting on primates is inhumane and shameful. Indeed, one of the key reasons why the industry is so eager to set up shop on Mauritius is the fact that so many other countries are turning their backs on primate experimentation. Many airlines won’t even allow the transportation of macaques if they are destined for labs. There’s a very good reason why this is the case. So many countries and companies have already faced public anger over experimentation, and have eventually been forced to back down through sheer outrage. Put simply, animal experimentation just isn’t popular. Nobody wants it, and Mauritius doesn’t need it. So please, save Mauritius’ reputation, and ditch primate experimentation.

Sincerely,
