Expand Access to Solar Energy in D.C.

Target: Washington D.C. Council

Goal: Expand access to solar energy for residents of Washington D.C.

The Washington DC Council is considering legislation that would make it easier for people in DC to purchase solar energy for their homes. The Council is holding a hearing on the proposed legislation on Thursday, June 14. We must voice our support for this important piece of legislation and show the government that there is demand for a renewable energy economy.

The Community Renewables Energy Act (CREA) of 2012 was created to expand access to solar energy for all DC residents by making it easier for homeowners, renters, for-profit, non-profit, third party entities and low-income utility customers to plug in to clean electricity production. CREA builds upon DC’s groundbreaking Clean and Affordable Energy Act of 2008 and is modeled on successful renewable energy laws enacted in other cities. CREA is of utmost importance for building the country’s clean economy because it works to remove many of the remaining regulatory barriers to harnessing solar power.

Currently, the DC government provides incentives for homeowners to install solar panels on their homes, but the incentives do not apply to those who rent, cannot afford a home solar system, or live in houses that can’t support solar installations. If CREA passes, anyone would be permitted to subscribe to a solar installation, and their portion would be credited to their monthly electricity bill. This effectively permits all utility rate payers to have equal opportunities to invest in cheaper, clean energy, boosting the renewable energy economy.

By signing the petition below, you are showing the DC Council and the U.S. Government that the public supports renewable energy legislation that promotes equal access to solar power and moves the country away from its dependence on oil and coal. Dear DC Councilmember,

I am writing to urge you to support the Community Renewables Energy Act of 2012.

Please endorse the Community Renewables Energy Act of 2012 and help lead the country towards a cleaner energy economy.
