Stop Trumpcare

Target: U.S. President Donald Trump

Goal: Back down from the American Healthcare Act, and honor campaign promise to create comprehensive, humane and affordable healthcare.

“God have mercy on your souls.” Those were the words of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) as House Republicans finally approved the universally despised American Healthcare Act, also known as Trumpcare. Her words sum up the mood of the country nicely; a recent poll from Quinnipiac University found less than two in ten Americans actually support Trumpcare.

At the time of writing, the bill still had to pass the Senate, though it’s no mystery why Trumpcare is so deeply unpopular. First, it will effectively allow states to opt out of Obamacare worker protections aimed at limiting payouts in extreme cases of serious illness, according to the Wall Street Journal. So if you get too sick, then too bad. Trumpcare will also empower insurance companies to once again place limits on lifetime coverage. In other words, if you get sick one too may times, then too bad. States can also now obtain waivers to opt out of mandatory coverage of mental health and maternity. So if you’re one of the 43 million Americans with a mental health issue like depression or anxiety, then your life just took a turn for the worse. If you want to have a baby one day, then you likewise better not expect your insurance company to help out anymore.

The list goes on. If you struggled to afford your insurance under Obamacare, then Trumpcare has a surprise in store for you: those Obama-era government subsidies are history, and have been replaced by a much weaker system of tax credits. In fact, if you have any pre-existing condition, you might soon find your healthcare costs explode beyond anything you’ve seen before. So what’s a pre-existing condition? Anything from obesity to diabetes, arthritis to alcohol problems, anxiety disorder to sleep apnea can count as a pre-existing condition, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. If you have any of these, then you might want to start saving your pennies, because times might be about to get pretty lean for you.

In short, most of what you loved about Obamacare is gone, while everything you hated has returned with a vengeance under Trumpcare. If you believe Americans deserve better, then sign our petition demanding Trump order Republicans to repeal this dreadful bill.

Dear President Trump,

Last November, millions of Americas voted for you because you promised to fix the many problems with Obamacare. You promised every single American will have access to health insurance. You promised to work with Congress to produce new healthcare legislation that will make care cheaper, better and more accessible.

You have failed.

Instead, you and congressional Republicans have created healthcare legislation that will do the exact opposite of what you promised. The American Healthcare Act, AKA Trumpcare, will increase prices, while giving big insurance companies the freedom to deny coverage to everyone from pregnant women to those living with mental illness. You’ve even allowed them to reinstate deeply unpopular caps on coverage, meaning even those who can still somehow afford insurance might not get the coverage they expect and deserve. In the court of public opinion, Trumpcare is guilty as charged. A whopping 83 percent of Americans do not support this legislation, and it’s pretty obvious why.

The American people deserve better than this lazy, cruel and utterly unacceptable attack on the well being of millions of ordinary people. We demand you publicly apologize for this mess, order Republicans to repeal this disaster. We then call on you to honor your promise to the American people, and actually sit down with Congress and create the healthcare legislative framework we desperately need.
