Protect State Parks from the Dangers of Fracking

Target: State Representative Fred Strahorn, Ohio House of Representatives Minority Leader

Goal: Don’t allow fracking in Ohio’s protected state parks.

The harmful practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, could soon be allowed in Ohio’s protected natural parks, thereby opening the parks up to environmental degradation. To accomplish this, state lawmakers in Ohio will strip the power of drilling licenses away from the state’s governor.

Currently, Governor John Kasich has the ability to appoint members to the Oil and Gas Commission, as well as issue natural gas permits. He has not appointed any members and has therefore halted any attempts at fracking in protected natural lands. That will change if the legislature gets its way.

If this measure passes, Ohio’s state parks will face increased industry, polluted water, and potential gas explosions or even earthquakes. Sign the petition and demand that Ohio’s state parks be protected.

Dear Representative Strahorn,

Lawmakers in Ohio have added a provision to the state’s budget that, if approved, would allow for hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as fracking, in Ohio’s state parks. All power would be stripped from the governor of the state when it comes to drilling decisions and be given to the state legislature.

Should this provision pass, Ohio’s state parks may very well be permanently destroyed. Fracking has already ruined some of our nation’s most pristine landscapes. To allow fracking in Ohio’s state parks will welcome habitat loss, water pollution, increased industrialization, possible gas explosions, and even potential earthquakes. I ask that you and your fellow lawmakers reject this provision in the new state budget.
