Oppose Tennessee 20-Week Abortion Ban

Target: Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam

Goal: Oppose 20-week abortion ban in Tennessee.

The Tennessee House of Representatives recently voted through a bill that aims to ban abortion at 20 weeks and jail doctors who perform abortions after that point. The bill could be signed into law by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam.

The bill, titled the Tennessee Infant Protection Act, requires that doctors test a fetus at 20 weeks of pregnancy to determine if it’s viable. Doctors who perform abortions on viable fetuses after 20 weeks would be charged with a felony and could face up to 15 years in prison.

This is one of many bills that states have passed in order to enact abortion bans, despite the Supreme Court ruling in 1973’s Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion in the United States. This ruling allows a woman to have an abortion up until around 24 weeks of pregnancy. The proposed Tennessee bill ignores the possibility of detecting fetal abnormalities in a 20-week ultrasound, as well as other complications that can occur later in pregnancy. Add your name to the petition below to oppose the Tennessee ban, another in a long list of states’ attempts to circumvent the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Haslam,

The Tennessee House of Representatives recently voted through the Tennessee Infant Protection Act, which would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and threatens to imprison doctors who perform them after that point. This bill does not take into account that fetal abnormalities can be detected during 20-week ultrasounds, and a variety of complications can arise later in pregnancies.

This proposed ban is in direct contrast to the Supreme Court ruling in the Roe v. Wade case, which gives a woman the right to have an abortion until around the 24-week point in a pregnancy. I urge you not to sign this bill into law, as it is one of several attempts made by individual states to circumvent the Roe v. Wade ruling.

To pass a 20-week abortion ban is to endanger the health of women in Tennessee and to disregard their legal right to bodily autonomy in the event of a pregnancy. I ask that you remember this as you review the Infant Protection Act.

Sincerely,

  1. Not signing this petition. Whether this ban goes against the Roe vs Wade decision is immaterial to me. Abortion is murder at any age.
Abortion doctors know this. They know that what they are doing to the “fetus” – which is the equivalent of “baby” in Latin – is torturing and murdering him or her. They know, when they remove the body parts they have severed, what they have done.
Let’s stop fooling ourselves. When people demand abortion, they are demanding the right to murder their babies.
