Demand Apology From Funeral Home To Grieving Gay Man

Target: Jim Hood, Attorney General of Mississippi

Goal: Demand funeral home accused of homophobia apologize to grieving husband.

An elderly Mississippi man is suing a funeral home who he alleges refused to cremate his deceased husband, saying they “didn’t want to deal with [his] kind.” The couple had been together for 50 years and legally married in 2015; the Lambda Legal LGBT rights group is joining the heartbroken Jack Zawadski in his fight.

This ugly incident is a grim reminder that no matter how far we have come for LGBT rights in the past few years, we still have quite a ways to go. Despite LGBT Americans having the same legal rights as their heterosexual counterparts, businesses still allow discrimination against them. To be shunned on the basis of his sexual orientation after losing his husband and partner of 50 years was a harsh blow to Zawadski, and is needlessly cruel on the part of the Picayune Funeral Home.

We cannot let this injustice stand. The Picayune Funeral Home must be held accountable for their alleged discrimination and issue a public apology to Zawadski as soon as possible, and must be made an example of to protect LGBT Americans against future discrimination. Sign this petition to help seek justice for Zawadski and his departed husband.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Hood,

An elderly gay man was shunned by a funeral home on the basis of his sexual orientation; the Picayune Funeral Home allegedly said that they refused to “deal with his kind.” This has been a shocking, harsh blow for the grieving Jack Zawadski, who was already dealing with the loss of his beloved spouse. This is completely unacceptable in an age where LGBT Americans deserve equal rights more than ever.

Do not let this injustice go unpunished. The funeral home must be held responsible for their reported discrimination and apologize to Zawadski for their harsh words, and you must ensure that something like this does not happen again.

Sincerely,

SHAME on the Picayune Funeral Home. HUMAN BEINGS – gay or straight – deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. It’s difficult enough to lose a loved one, without unnecessary hatred from ignorant individuals !!!!!!!

I AM SO SORRY THAT MR. ZAWADSKI has lost a partner of so
many years. I AM SORRY ALSO THAT he has this extra cruelty to deal with.

All human beings deserve respect and I hope that funeral home is educated real soon.
