Target: Washington State Government
Goal: Prevent the recently enacted same-sex marriage law from being overturned by anti-gay activists.
Washington’s Governor Christine Gregoire may have signed the same-sex marriage bill into law in January 2012, but marriage equality is still under attack by anti-gay associations. These groups include the notorious National Organization For Marriage (NOM) and Preserve Marriage Washington (PMW). These organizations are supposedly presenting a petition with more than 225,000 signatures on it in an attempt to bring the bill back to the ballot in November, enabling citizens to vote on it once more. This chance will be used to make gay marriage illegal in Washington.
Preserve Marriage Washington declares on their website that should the same-sex marriage bill be allowed to become law, “[there] would be profound consequences for religious organizations, individuals, medical professionals, and small businesses – and for society itself.” The same-sex marriage bill that will take effect on Thursday, June 7th, unless challengers oppose it enough to cause a voter referendum in November 2012, will do no such thing. The only changes that will occur are marriages between two people who love one another regardless of gender.
Sign the petition now to save same-sex marriage in Washington and tell these anti-gay organizations that it is unlawful and unconstitutional to vote on a person’s inalienable rights.
Dear Washington State Government,
I write to you to show my support for SB 6239, the bill that will allow same-sex marriage to occur in Washington. I was disturbed and saddened to hear that anti-gay groups such as the National Organization for Marriage and Preserve Marriage Washington are presenting a 225,000-signature petition in order to overturn the bill that would simply allow two people who love one another to marry regardless of gender.
Please regard this letter as a counter petition to the signatures anti-gay groups will present to you. It is extremely important to continue to support same-sex marriage, despite the opposition from people who have allowed their religious and personal beliefs to dictate other citizens’ rights. Washington has led the way for the many states that have yet to legalize same-sex marriage. It is my hope that these opponents will be overthrown and the inalienable rights of Washington’s citizens will be protected regardless of their sexual orientation.
