Target: Chief Justice Roderick L. Ireland
Goal: Prosecute landlord Janice Roberts for housing discrimination against Army veterans.
Twenty-nine year old Joel Morgan is a veteran of the Iraq War and the father of a 19-month old son. He was recently told that he could not rent a Savin Hill, MA apartment due to the landlady’s political and peace activism. After telling the landlady that he would be paying for the apartment with his Army disability benefits and taking home a rental application, he received a voicemail from Janice Roberts expressing concern that his status as an Army veteran would represent a conflict of interest, and that he should consider seeking housing elsewhere.
Mr. Morgan has since found housing elsewhere, but has stated that his anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms have increased, and that he now experiencing sleeplessness and panic attacks. He is also concerned about revealing his veteran status to future potential landlords.
While federal law does not prohibit rental discrimination against veterans, Massachusetts law forbids refusal to rent based on a person’s veteran status or the fact that they are a member of the Armed Forces. Mr. Morgan has since filed a complaint with the Suffolk Superior Court against Janice Roberts.
Regardless of a person’s personal political beliefs and feelings towards the Iraq War, veterans should not be discriminated against for their participation in the war, nor denied housing for it. By signing the petition below, you are asking the Suffolk Superior Court to prosecute Janice Roberts for her discrimination against Joel Morgan.
Dear Chief Justice Roderick L. Ireland,
Army veteran Joel Morgan was unfairly discriminated against by Janice Roberts for his veteran status. Massachusetts law forbids discrimination against veterans and members of the Armed Forces, yet Mrs. Roberts believes that she is in the right because she is a peace activist.
Despite someone’s personal political beliefs, veterans have made sacrifices for their country, and many have returned from the Iraq War with post-traumatic stress disorder. Denying them housing based on their veteran status is cruel and leaves them feeling like second class citizens.
Please cite Janice Roberts for her discrimination against Joel Morgan. She has gone against Massachusetts law and now Mr. Morgan’s post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms have worsened since being denied housing by Ms. Roberts. He is also concerned about revealing his veteran status to future potential landlords.
We cannot have our Armed Forces veterans feeling ashamed for their service, nor be denied housing for their service.
