Applaud Ban on Wild Animals in Circus Performances

Target: David Ryu, Los Angeles City Councilman

Goal: Praise the City of Los Angeles’ decision to ban the use of wild animals at venues for entertainment purposes.

As the era of exploiting wild animals such as tigers and lions at circuses has begun to wane due to public outcry, the City of Los Angeles has now become the largest city in the United States to ban the public exhibition of exotic creatures for entertainment purposes. In a unanimous vote, the Los Angeles City Council signaled that using wild animals to perform tricks or to amuse people in venues such as circuses, parties, or private shows is unacceptable and no longer in line with the city’s values.

Previously, the city had voted to ban the abusive practice of training elephants using bullhooks, or pointed sticks that are thrust into the animal’s side to inflict pain. This measure was cited as contributing to the decline and eventual end of Ringling Bros.’ use of elephants in their shows in 2016. It is hopeful that the city’s ban will influence other cities nationwide so that eventually no wild creatures will have to suffer long periods of isolation in small cages, chained whenever they are not being forced to perform.

While the new ban does not prevent animals from being used on film sets, which continue to exploit and at times place animals in harm’s way, this marks a significant step in the right direction. Sign this petition to thank Councilman David Ryu for introducing this important measure and for advocating so passionately on behalf of the animals who have suffered so long due to human greed.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Councilman Ryu,

I wish to commend you and your fellow council members for the landmark decision the City of Los Angeles recently made in banning the public exhibition of wild animals for entertainment purposes. As you are well aware, animals used to perform at venues such as circuses are often treated cruelly and are forced into unnatural circumstances that can place both animals and people in danger. No animal should have to be chained, beaten or neglected simply for profit.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish to thank you for your efforts and am hopeful you will continue to make the City of Los Angeles a kinder and more humane place for all animals.

Sincerely,
