Do Not Allow Racial Segregation in Schools

Target: Jeff Sessions, U.S. Attorney General

Goal: Reverse the ruling allowing Gardendale, Alabama to secede from its school district and set a precedent of re-segregation.

A predominantly white suburb has been allowed to separate from its more diverse school district for racially-motivated reasons. After years of effort dedicated to encouraging racial balance in public schools, this sets a dangerous precedent that threatens Jefferson County’s hard-won desegregation, and other white-majority communities in the county are already considering following suit.

Even Judge Madeline Haikala, who ruled to allow the city of Gardendale’s separation from its school district, acknowledged that Gardendale’s efforts to secede were racially motivated, and that they send a harmful message that would “assail the dignity of black schoolchildren.” She said that she based her ruling in part on a fear that minority children would suffer even more if the city’s bid to separate was blocked, and the children forced to bear the blame. However, since Judge Haikala publicly concluded that the move to create new school-district boundaries was racially motivated, the precedent that this ruling sets will undoubtedly cause even more widespread harm to black students. Sign below to demand that this dangerous ruling be overturned.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Sessions,

The bid of the the Birmingham suburb of Gardendale to separate from the school district of Jefferson County in order to form its own was found to be racially motivated, and the ruling that allows it is extremely damaging.

Decades have been spent promoting the desegregation of public education, especially in and around Birmingham, Alabama, which was one of the most thoroughly segregated places in the country. Not only does this ruling undermine that, it also sets a harmful precedent for other communities in the area, and innocent minority schoolchildren will be the ones who have to pay the price. I urge you to overturn this ruling and protect the civil rights of these children.

Sincerely,
