Justice for 15-Year-Old Allegedly Shot and Killed by Police

Target: Jonathan Haber, Balch Springs Police Chief

Goal: A third party investigation must be conducted regarding the officer who reportedly shot and killed a teenage boy, and the officer must be fired indefinitely if guilty of using unnecessary lethal force.

A 15-year-old boy was reportedly shot and killed during what police vaguely called an “unknown altercation.” According to the police’s vague account, a vehicle began backing down the street in an “aggressive manner,” so one of the officers just began shooting and struck the passenger seat, killing the high school freshman, John Edwards. The police chief stated at a news conference that officers got a call about drunken teenagers in the neighborhood, and when they arrived, they allegedly heard gunshots. The officer has only been placed on administrative duty and his name hasn’t even been released.

The police say they were responding to a 911 call about drunken teenagers, so they already knew that they were dealing with youth, so it’s appalling that they were so ready to shoot when the teenagers were in their vehicle, not threatening the officers. Additionally, calling it an “unknown altercation” is suspiciously vague. To make matters worse, the police department themselves will be overseeing the internal investigation. The officers involved in fatally shooting this young boy owe it to the deceased and his loved ones to be more transparent about the “altercation.” Please sign this petition to demand that this young man gets the justice he deserves and the officers involved be permanently fired, if guilty of over-reacting and using unnecessary, lethal force.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Haber,

A high school freshman was reportedly shot and killed by police who were allegedly responding to a 911 call about drunken teenagers. In their vague report, they referred to the event as an “unknown altercation,” and claimed they heard gunshots and that the teenagers in the vehicle were backing up “aggressively.”

There have already been two stories about what happened, but only one of the accounts must be the truth. It seems police may have overreacted and tragically ended this young boy’s life. We, the undersigned, demand that a full, third party investigation be conducted regarding the possibility of the officer using unnecessary, lethal force in the shooting of John Edwards. We are also demanding that the officer be fired and never allowed to work in a position of authority if guilty.

Sincerely,

  2. Gillian Miller Gillian Miller says:

In the UK, the police force is not armed. However, there is a special armed unit that is highly trained to respond to a call where an armed individual needs to be dealt with. These officers have to undergo psychological testing before they are allowed onto the unit.

I suspect that over 90% of the various American police/sheriffs etc would fail that.

  3. “The police department themselves will be overseeing the internal investigation”. If they investigate themselves, you can kiss goodbye to any truth or any justice for this boy.
