Remove Climate Denier from the New York Times

Target: Liz Spayd, Public Editor for the New York Times

Goal: Fire climate change denier Bret Stephens.

Since the election of President Trump, the New York Times has established itself at the vanguard of responsible reporting, holding the administration accountable for its lies and deceit. However, in hiring Bret Stephens, a climate change denier formerly of the Wall Street Journal, the Times has threatened its legacy of a source of truthful news. Stephens has called climate change an imaginary problem and despite not being a scientist himself, believes that the uncertainties surrounding our climate-changed future are reason enough not to fight it.

By sowing doubt in climate change, Stephens provides justification for conservatives to strengthen their belief that the climate is not changing and nothing should be done to curb the use of dirty, polluting fossil fuels, and the New York Times has just given him a national stage to espouse his erroneous beliefs. Sign this petition to show the New York Times that the people who know and admire its work will not stand for the erosion of its character by Mr. Stephens and his misguided beliefs on a topic so crucial to our survival on this planet.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Spayd,

In the months since the election of Donald Trump, the New York Times has established its voice as one of truth and courage in the face of an administration opposed to both. However, by hiring columnist and climate denier Bret Stephens, the Times risks its reputation as a reliable and honest news source. Stephens has a penchant for stoking doubts about climate change, and in a world increasingly threatened by climate change, such views are a dangerous barrier to solving it. In his first column for the Times, Stephens has shown he will not be changing his mindset, and will use his new position to spread his fallacious beliefs to his readers, pushing back against the progress of those fighting to save us from a climate-changed world.

By giving Stephens a larger stage to espouse his views, the Times is abetting climate change deniers who wish to halt progress towards a sustainable future for all. I urge you to remove Stephens from his position so that the New York Times can continue to be a reliable source of fact-based viewpoints that people across the globe can read, understand, and learn from.

Sincerely,
