Stop States Lying to Students About Climate Change

Target: Betsy DeVos, U.S. Secretary of Education

Goal: Prevent states from allowing schools to teach climate change denial to students.

Despite the fact that more than 97 percent of climate scientists agree anthropogenic climate change is occurring, roughly a third of Americans are still not convinced, and with President Trump leading the country, climate science is facing even more denial. Six states are now pushing rules that allow educators to teach climate change denial and creationism in schools. Because the rules are designed around euphemistic “academic freedom,” many scientists fear they will stand up to legal scrutiny, to the detriment of our children. If conservative politicians get their way, students will be subject to erroneous lessons that cast doubt on climate change where little exists, and will see their educations and futures suffer.

While bills allowing climate change denial in schools have been around for over a decade, legislators have been largely unable to pass them until now, when climate change deniers find themselves in positions of power throughout the White House thanks to President Trump. In Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Indiana, Alabama, and Idaho, teachers may soon be allowed to cast doubt on so-called “controversial” scientific topics like evolution and climate change, despite the fact that there is little doubt surrounding either in the minds of the actual scientists who study them. Of course, corporate interests and their lobbyists are ultimately behind these nefarious rules, and they stand to benefit greatly from continued doubt about scientific facts. As the education of our children faces threats from biased parties and the politicization of science, a federal rule preventing fallacious lessons surrounding scientific realities like climate change must be passed to protect our children and their futures.

Dear Secretary DeVos,

Since the election of President Trump, science education is facing new threats from politicization, as state legislators across the country push new rules providing “academic freedom” for educators to teach doubt surrounding topics like climate change and evolution despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of scientists agree these are realities. In fact, more than 97 percent of climate scientists agree that human-caused climate change is occurring, but if politicians in Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Indiana, Alabama, and Idaho have their way, students in their classrooms will be taught to doubt the facts surrounding this pressing environmental issue. If students are taught to doubt the scientific realities of climate change, they will be much less likely to act to change the status quo, and will find their futures irreparably impaired as a result.

For these reasons, I am writing to you today to ask that you use your position as Secretary of Education to pass a rule requiring the nation’s schools to teach the facts about climate change, evolution, and other so-called scientific “controversies.” Educators serve an important role in shaping the minds of our nation’s children and must be responsible for providing them the most accurate, up-to-date information on the topics they teach. Making this a requirement will prevent the political and corporate pollution of our children’s science education and allow them to grow as successful future problem-solvers and visionaries.

First of all, people need to stop fearing debate and stop fearing the testing of scientific theories. The fear-mongering needs to stop.
Labeling those who disagree with climate change or evolution as liars is NOT acceptable. As well, it immediately tarnishes their reputations and dismisses them before they can defend themselves.
There are many reputable scientists who disagree with climate change or evolution and have scientific arguments to back up their conclusions.
If we shut these scientists up and close our ears to their arguments, we in effect are subscribing to a BELIEF SYSTEM – the IRRATIONAL or even RELIGIOUS BELIEF in certain OFFICIALLY APPROVED SCIENTISTS.
Do we want a BELIEF SYSTEM or do we genuinely want the TRUTH?
