Protect Waterways From Dangerous Pollutants

Target: Eric Holcomb, Governor of Indiana

Goal: Urge the state of Indiana to protect its vital water sources from pollutants.

Numerous news reports, spanning from at least 2007 to 2014, point out the sobering fact that the U.S. state of Indiana has the most polluted waterways in the country. The Indianapolis Star reported this year that “more than 60 percent of Indiana’s lakes and rivers are polluted enough to be classified as impaired,” and “raw sewage… fouls at least 7,000 miles of rivers and streams in the state.”

In 2012, 206 million pounds of toxic waste was dumped into American waterways, with over 17 million pounds of that dumped in Indiana alone — a greater amount than in any other state in the country.

Pollutant runoff into regional waterways includes everything from industrial and automobile-related chemicals, such as motor oil and antifreeze, to pesticides, fertilizers, sewage and wastewater, with factories and other industrial facilities being the primary culprits in the continued fouling of the state’s water bodies.

The state of Indiana can and must do more to protect its waterways, which are vital to the state’s economy and the people who live there. Proper disposal of pollutants at their sources, as well as a concerted effort to remove pollutants already released into regional waterways, would both be tremendously beneficial in this regard. Sign below to demand increased efforts to protect the people of Indiana from polluted waterways.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Holcomb,

Indiana is known to have the most polluted waterways of any state in the U.S. Industrial, municipal, and agricultural waste, as well as sewage have and continue to foul the precious water sources of the state.

In 2012, over 17 million pounds of untreated waste were dumped into Indiana’s waters, with terribly little done since then to counter the continued destruction of the environment.

Something can and must be done to reverse this trend for the sake of the state of Indiana, the Great Lakes region, and the country as a whole. Benefits to the environment translate into benefits for people, both financially and health-wise, in the short- and long-term, in Indiana and beyond.

Sincerely,
