Do Not Loosen School Lunch Standards

Target: Sonny Perdue, Agriculture Secretary

Goal: Do not ease school lunch nutrition standards.

Sonny Perdue, the Trump administration’s Agriculture Secretary, may loosen nutrition standards for lunches in American schools. These nutrition standards are largely the result of Michelle Obama’s initiative to reduce childhood obesity in the United States.

Republicans have been working against Mrs. Obama’s efforts for several years, under the guise of allowing schools more time to meet updated nutrition standards and provide healthier lunches to their students. Nancy Brown, of the American Heart Association, released a statement saying that the large majority of schools already comply with updated standards and that they are working well. “Improving children’s health should be a top priority for the USDA,” she said, “and serving more nutritious foods in schools is a clear-cut way to accomplish this goal.”

Children need to be well-fed in order to maximize their learning potential at school. Sign the petition below to ask that school lunches remain healthy and nutritious.

Providing nutritious school lunches is an important aspect of protecting and promoting the health of American children. Sign the petition below to oppose the decision to loosen deadlines for meeting nutrition standards in U.S. schools.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Perdue,

It was recently announced that you plan to provide American schools with more flexibility in terms of meeting nutrition standards for school lunches. These standards were pioneered by Michelle Obama in an effort to reduce childhood obesity in the United States, and the schools already in compliance with these standards are making progress in that regard.

Since the updated nutrition standards are doing the job they were designed to do, it’s unclear why your department would decide to allow schools an extended amount of time to meet these standards if they have not already. Rather than promoting the health of American children, you appear to be deciding that it is not a time-sensitive or important concern.

I urge you in your position as Agriculture Secretary to reconsider this decision and maintain the current timeline for meeting these school lunch nutrition standards. The updated standards are helping to lessen and prevent cases of childhood obesity, and easing these standards in any way is a step backward in this effort.

Sincerely,
