Don’t Let Trump Destroy Our Oceans for Offshore Drilling

Target: Ryan Zinke, U.S. Interior Secretary

Goal: Prevent opening new areas to offshore exploration and drilling for oil and gas.

President Trump has signed yet another executive order, dismantling the legacy of former President Obama, aimed at allowing offshore exploration and drilling for oil and gas. While President Obama sought to prevent fossil fuel companies from drilling in the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Ocean for fear of the large and likely environmental and economic risks, President Trump has once again proven that he is more concerned with pleasing big business than helping the American people.

While Trump spouts Republican talking points about creating jobs and energy independence, the truth is offshore drilling will do little of either. The facts are that offshore drilling is incredibly dangerous, especially in the Arctic where extreme weather and the unproven ability to clean oil from sea ice has driven several energy companies to abandon plans to drill. Furthermore, as evidenced by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, offshore drilling can easily go wrong, with catastrophic effects on regional ecosystems and economies. Because of the risks, offshore drilling is very unpopular and was not previously considered in the Pacific Ocean due to push-back from Western governors.

Yet President Trump seems undeterred by the truth of the matter and is seemingly focused on erasing the progress of President Obama at all costs. The Trump administration needs to know that we won’t accept this heinous order and will work tirelessly to protect marine areas from any more hazardous drilling.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Zinke,

President Trump has signed a new executive order instructing you to reevaluate offshore areas for oil and gas drilling and exploration. Though he touts trite Republican talking points about creating jobs and increasing energy independence, the truth is that new offshore drilling in the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific will accomplish neither. What it will do is place millions of acres of sensitive marine ecosystems in danger and threaten the economies of coastal communities.

For these reasons, the Obama administration restricted offshore drilling from these oceans and in doing so represented the will of the people most affected by it. By reversing this decision, the Trump administration is misusing its power to serve big business interests, not American citizens, and threatening vital environments and economies to do it. I urge you to prevent any more offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling from tainting America’s coasts in order to preserve the livelihoods and ecosystems that the American people rely on.

Sincerely,

  1. Kathryn Irby says:

Stop Trump for destroying oceans as a result of offshore drilling NOW!!

  2. ban the oil spills now.

  3. Well I didn’t care too much for Obama, but he’s starting to look pretty angelic compared to Trump.
It seems like Trump is out to destroy everything – for profits, of course.

  4. I’m in LOVE with the Ocean and its marine life, hell I’d rather be a mermaid or sea nymph and give up all the things in the world for it. Anyways, when I saw this I was furious, I want to protect the ocean at all costs, someday I want to be a part of ocean conservation. PROTECT THE OCEAN
