Close the Gender Wage Gap: Support Equal Pay for Equal Work

Target: US Congressmen

Goal: Ensure that men and women are given equal pay for equal work.

The Paycheck Fairness Act, if passed, will revisit previous legislation to protect equality in wages. The act will force employers to justify their differences in pay between men and women, and increase penalties for employers if they violate pay laws. By increasing accountability, the Paycheck Fairness Act will help to close the gender wage gap between men and women.

The last act passed of this nature was the Equal Pay Act, enacted in 1963. It initially banned paying men and women different wages for equal work, but it has become outdated and needs strengthening. It has been too easy for businesses to get around the Equal Pay Act.

If the Paycheck Fairness Act is passed, it will allow employees to discuss their wages, increase research about the causes of the wage gap, and retrain members of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission staff to assist in better solving of wage disputes. Tell US Congressmen to support wage equality by advancing this crucial legislation.

Dear US Congressmen,

Currently, the American woman makes 77 cents for every dollar made by the American man. This disparity is unacceptable. Hold businesses accountable and support the Paycheck Fairness Act, so that all people will receive equal pay for equal work regardless of their gender.

I urge you to support the Paycheck Fairness Act, and work for a less prejudiced America.
