Justice for Man Allegedly Beaten By Police at Hospital After Surgery

Target: Tony Grootens, Jacksonville, Florida Chief of Police

Goal: Fire officer caught on video using excessive force against a man who was at the hospital after having jaw surgery.

Twenty-one-year-old Daniel Nyman was at a hospital after having jaw surgery when police allegedly brutalized and arrested the young man. In the video footage, a police officer appears to spit at Nyman after walking up behind him. An argument ensues and Nyman is forcibly taken down by a police officer who then appears to grind the the young man’s head repeatedly into the concrete. Nyman’s mother, Julie Yarbrough, says that her father was yelling “he has a broken jaw,” but the officer refused to listen, so she ran over only to be taken down by an officer herself. To make matters worse, the victim had reportedly been sent to the hospital twice in the past month for psychiatric evaluation, and according to reports, police were fully aware of this.

The way the officer chose to handle a person who was already suffering physical injuries and could’ve been under duress seems extremely uncalled for. The sheriff’s office doesn’t seem to be too concerned about the possibility of an officer being caught on camera using excessive force. A public statement from the sheriff’s office stated that a formal complaint has not been received, but they would “look into” the issue. Just looking into the issue isn’t enough when there’s a possibility of police brutality going on. Please sign the petition below to demand that this officer be fired permanently if guilty of excessive force.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Grootens,

A young man was at a hospital after recently having surgery for his broken jaw when a police officer reportedly used excessive force to arrest him. In video footage, a police officer appears to walk up behind the victim and spit at him before an argument ensues. The officer is then seen taking the victim to the ground, face-first, and then grinding his face into the cement. The victim’s mother says she began yelling “he has a broken jaw,” but the officer refused to listen, so she ran closer and was slammed to the ground by another officer.

This young man was already suffering from the injury of a broken jaw and recent surgery, but reports say that he’d also recently had psychiatric evaluations. Police reportedly knew this information and still, the officer in the video appears to use an unnecessary and excessive amount of force against a young man who hadn’t even threatened him. We are calling on you to make sure that justice is served by ensuring that this officer is fired, if guilty of the excessive force.

Sincerely,
