Protect Openly Gay Bishop From Losing Post

Target: Reverend Thomas J. Reese, Chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom

Goal: Demand openly gay bishop be allowed to keep her post.

Methodist bishop Karen Oliveto could lose her post for being openly gay. The church laws forbidding open homosexuals from clergy appointments have been heavily challenged due to the influx of LGBT rights across the country, but not enough to keep the church courts from holding endless discussions about whether or not Oliveto should be allowed to remain in her position. Many evangelists in opposition to her remaining claim it would violate the centuries-old church law.

Oliveto has been an inspiration to many LGBT youths who have felt unwelcome at their churches due to their sexual orientation, or who have been kicked out of their homes by their parents. She is living proof that religion does not have to be the overly strict institution it once was and continues to be painted as by the media. Not only is she a positive role model for LGBT religious people, but she is a person with every right to hold a major position at a church regardless of sexual orientation.

We must ensure that this wonderful woman keeps her post. We cannot let her be removed due to a law that should have been repealed years ago, in an age where LGBT people are being allowed more and more of the rights that they deserve. Sign this petition to protect Bishop Oliveto’s post from archaic and bigoted laws.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Reverend Reese,

Bishop Karen Oliveto’s post is being threatened by the church courts, who feel an openly gay bishop violates their laws of forbidding openly LGBT people from holding such positions. These laws are not only bigoted, but archaic and outdated in an age where LGBT people are gaining more and more rights. Religion is no longer the oppressive institution the media has painted it as, and a person’s sexual orientation should have no bearing on their faith. Additionally, Oliveto’s openly gay stance has served as a comfort and an inspiration to LGBT youths who have been told they are unwelcome at their own churches and even their homes.

Please do not allow Bishop Oliveto to lose her post. She is a wonderful woman and an excellent bishop who has every right to be proud of her sexual orientation and her faith alike. Protect her post and challenge the outdated laws that would revoke it.

Sincerely,
