Stop Censoring Online Footage of Abuse by Authorities

Target: Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India

Goal: Stop the abuse and freedom of speech violations against Kashmiris for posting video footage of abuse by soldiers online.

In response to video footage depicting abuse by Indian security forces, authorities reportedly forced Internet service providers to block Kashmir citizens from social media websites and other online chat apps. Some of the recent videos that prompted this government response show a teenage boy being shot by a solider, and another shows soldiers beat a teenage boy across the back with a stick as they use their boots to hold him down. In another clip, a little boy with a bloody face can be seen crying while others show soldiers forcing children to do push ups. A group of young men who appear in a third video, are held in an an armored vehicle where a soldier kicks and hits them with a stick while forcing them to yell profanities against Islam. Yet another video shows a young man being hit with stones while tied to the hood of an Army Jeep as it drives around on voting day.

Over 20 sites, including Facebook and Twitter, were among the social media websites that were blocked, and according to some reports, 3G and 4G Internet connections in Kashmir Valley have been shut down entirely for over a week. The government claimed the restrictions were made “in the interest of maintenance of public order.” Pranesh Prakash, Policy Director of the Center for Internet and Society, called the recent order a violation of the Indian Constitution and international law. If the government really cared about the “interest of maintenance and public order,” they wouldn’t allow the authorities to continue getting away with the horrific abuse for so many years. It’s time that these barbaric, cruel practices be stopped and the abusive authorities punished. Please add your signature to the petition below to demand that the Government of India stop censoring and punishing innocent citizens and stripping them of their Constitutional rights.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Modi,

Authorities have reportedly ordered a restriction on social media websites in response to the numerous videos that surfaced online depicting horrendous abuse by Indian soldiers. The video footage shows children and teenagers being abused and forced to do push ups while other clips showed young men being kicked and beaten with sticks. One young man was even tied to the front of a vehicle that paraded him around on voting day while stones were thrown at his head.

It’s disturbing that the soldiers seen in video footage aren’t punished for the extreme violence, but now the rights of the innocent victims are being stripped away. Their freedom of speech is being taken and they’re being punished for the videos when they aren’t the ones appearing to be beating innocent people. We are calling on you to take immediate action to stop this disgusting violation of constitutional rights and to ensure that the abusive soldier do not go unpunished.

Sincerely,

  2. Such a corrupt government. Shameful that they are trying to shut up everyone trying to expose them.
