Reject Trump’s Budget Proposal That Would Threaten Women’s Rights Worldwide

Target: Paul Ryan, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives

Goal: Reject Trump’s proposed budget cut that would eliminate the State Department’s global efforts to promote women’s rights worldwide.

Girls and women around the world, particularly in developing nations, could suffer greatly if Donald Trump’s proposed budget for the United States State Department is approved by Congress. The proposal would eliminate over $8 million in spending for promoting women’s rights worldwide on topics such as gender equality and ending gender-based violence. If Trump gets his way, the entire budget for the State Department’s Office of Global Women’s Issues would be cut.

The Office of Global Women’s issues has been a powerful advocate for women worldwide, in particular in pushing for education for adolescent girls, which provides them with more options for a better future and helps keep them safe from violence and exploitation. The team has also sought to end child marriages in places affected by the Syrian refugee crisis as well as educate families in the Middle East and Africa about the dangers of female genital mutilation.

Should Trump’s budget be approved, all of these programs and initiatives would be threatened, as the money saved would be redirected into national security spending. Beyond women’s issues, Trump is also proposing cutting all aid overall to developing nations by a third, which will also directly impact women’s lives and well-being in many struggling countries.

These cuts are damaging to girls and women worldwide and must be challenged. Sign this petition to send a message that humanitarian efforts, including those that help women, are a moral imperative for the United States.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Speaker Ryan,

The president’s budget proposal for the State Department seeks to eliminate millions of dollars spent toward ensuring that the basic rights of girls and women worldwide are upheld. This money goes to initiatives aimed at improving education, health and economic stability among women, especially in developing nations. For example, these programs have helped send Afghan girls to school and have prevented child marriages among Syrian refugees.

This valuable work must not be brought to an end. The United States has a moral obligation to help the millions of women and girls who are threatened by gender-based violence and lack access to education. I urge you to not pass this misguided proposal.

Sincerely,
