Stop Cruelly Driving Sharks Toward Extinction

Target: Josh Frydenberg, Environment Minister

Goal: Protect Australia’s sharks from lethal control methods that could drive some species to extinction.

Lethal shark control methods that are used in Australia run the risk of driving certain species to extinction. Shark culling and the use of drum lines (a trap used to lure and capture sharks using baited hooks) could wipe out the endangered gray nurse sharks and loggerhead turtles. They could also force hammerhead sharks and tiger sharks to a threatened status.

The Western Australian government has ruled out drum lines because they have proven to be ineffective, but a recent report showed that hundreds of marine animals became entangled in net traps between 2015-2016. Of the animals that were trapped, 86 percent were threatened, protected or species not intended to be targeted by the traps — including dolphins and turtles. These methods are obviously not just harmful to sharks but to many different forms of marine life.

These methods are obviously not just harmful to sharks but to many different forms of marine life. It has also been proven that these methods are ineffective in preventing shark attacks. Sign this petition to encourage environment minister Josh Frydenberg to ban shark culling and drum lines because they are threatening activities, and to encourage more humane solutions.

Dear Mr. Frydenberg,

Lethal shark control methods used in Australia, like shark culling and drum lines, are threatening to species that are already endangered and to many other forms of marine life. Continuing to use them could wipe out the gray nurse shark and loggerhead turtle.

It addition to being threatening to those already endangered animals, drum lines run the risk of driving species such as hammerhead sharks and tiger sharks to a threatened status. Drum lines have been proven to be ineffective in preventing shark attacks. Not only are they not doing the job they are set up to do, but they are extremely harmful to sharks and other marine wildlife not meant to be targeted like dolphins and turtles.

These methods need to be banned because they are threatening to many forms of marine life. We encourage you to seek out more humane solutions and protect the beautiful species that need to be preserved.

  1. It can be rather exasperating appealing over and over again to governments around the world to protect and save wildlife and the environment, knowing that they don’t care one iota about them. Well, WE care, and will NOT give up.
