Trump: Protect National Monuments

Target: Donald Trump

Goal: Protect national monuments jeopardized by latest executive order.

Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that calls for a review of national monuments designated over the last 21 years. The Department of the Interior will review all monument designations since 1996, which amounts to more than 50 monuments named throughout three presidencies.

Presidents are allowed to designate national monuments according to the 1906 Antiquities Act. These important geographic and historical sites are afforded federal protections once they are named national monuments. Trump claims the review is necessary to find out if any president since 1996 abused the power afforded in the Antiquities Act.

This order is being seen as an attack on public lands in the United States, especially considering Trump’s attack on the Environmental Protection Agency earlier this year. The National Wildlife Federation released a statement reading, “Eliminating or shrinking the 55 national monuments designated during the last 21 years would short-circuit the will of local residents, hunters, anglers, business owners and recreationists who campaigned, in some cases for decades, for these monument designations.”

Sign the letter below to demand that Trump protect our national monuments.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Trump,

One of your recently proposed executive orders calls for a review of national monuments that have been designated over the last 21 years. If you sign this order, more than 50 important monuments across the United States will be at risk of losing their status, and therefore their federal protections.

National monuments are areas of geographic and historical significance that are being preserved thanks to the federal protections they are afforded once they’ve been designated. The National Wildlife Federation has already spoken out about the dangers of jeopardizing these protections.

I strongly urge you to reconsider this executive order. Your administration has shown a blatant disregard for protecting the environment, and the suggestion that former presidents’ use of the Antiquities Act may have been federal overreach is absurd. I ask that you not sign this order and that you work to protect the national monuments of historical and geographic importance across the U.S.

Sincerely,
