Demand Justice for Dog and Horse Allegedly Starved and Neglected

Target: Bill Montgomery, Prosecuting Attorney, Maricopa County, Arizona

Goal: Punish woman accused of neglecting a dog and a horse to the point that the horse needed to be put down.

A dog has been rescued from its owner after suffering what officials are calling “years of neglect.” Lillie, a cocker spaniel, was found filthy, with extremely matted fur. The dog had trouble walking and she appeared skinny.

Police also found a dark brown horse, named Santos, at the scene. He was so emaciated that his bones were showing. His body was covered in parasites and he had a severe heart murmur. Due to the extent of the neglect he faced, Santos had to be euthanized.

The owner admitted that the animals had not received veterinary care in years. She also said that, due to her declining health, she was unable to care for the animals. Despite this, she allowed them to languish and live in pain instead of asking a neighbor or family member for help or surrendering the animals to a qualified shelter.

Fortunately, Lillie is expected to recover. A veterinarian removed the large clumps of mats from her fur. While her condition is improving, the Sheriff’s Office says it is not clear when or if Lillie will be healthy enough for adoption.

This alleged neglect was one of the most severe cases that the veterinarian had seen in 21 years. It’s important that, despite the owner’s declining health, justice is served for these animals. Sign below to ask the prosecutor to seek a ban on animal ownership, which will ensure that no more animals are subjected to this alleged cruelty.

Dear Mr. Montgomery,

A woman is accused of animal cruelty for allegedly starving a dog and a horse and denying them medical care. The dog was found with large, clumped mats and filthy fur while the horse was so thin that its bones were showing. The horse had parasites covering it as well as a severe heart murmur, and had to be euthanized due to the poor state of its health. Both animals had trouble walking, per reports.

While the owner was sick, this is no excuse. There are several shelters in the area that could have been called in to remove the pets. In order to ensure that no more animals are subjected to this treatment, we ask that you seek to ban this woman from pet ownership for life.
