Stop Promoting Trump’s Businesses On Government Websites

Target: Rex Tillerson, U.S. Secretary of State

Goal: Remove from all government-monitored web platforms mention of businesses affiliated with government officials.

Government websites are promoting Mar-a-Lago, a Trump-owned estate, on their websites and other platforms, which is another breach of ethics by the Trump Administration. An article about the history of Donald Trump’s golf resort being the “winter White House” was shared on the State Department’s website as well as the websites of embassies for the United Kingdom and Albania. President Trump reportedly already spends about half his time at Mar-a-Lago and has hosted foreign leaders there. While marketing his Florida home and business, the article may be a vain attempt to explain all his time there.

The source of the article is a State Department-run website called Share America that aims to gain traffic through stories about democracy, innovation, and other important issues. The Mar-a-Lago article does not fall into these categories, and its appearance on government websites defies ethics laws because public office is being used for private gain. Prior to the publication of this article, the White House circulated an article about a new venture by Exxon Mobil, which used to be run by U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. Press releases for businesses affiliated with public officials should not be promoted on government websites. Sign this petition to demand that Tillerson remove mention of Mar-a-Lago from the State Department’s website and stop promoting Trump’s businesses.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Tillerson,

The Trump Administration continues to break ethics laws with the circulation of an article about the history of Mar-a-Lago. At least two embassies and the State Department’s website shared the Share America article in an attempt to name Trump’s estate the “winter White House.” As the government does not own this property, it should have nothing to do with the White House, even if that was its builder’s intention.

Promoting the businesses of public officials is deplorable and should not be tolerated. I demand that you have any mention of Mar-a-Lago removed from the State Department’s website and stop promoting the businesses of anyone in the Trump Administration, including your former oil company, Exxon Mobil.

Sincerely,
