Stop Forcing Rape Victims to Pay Medical Bills

Target: Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island Senator

Goal: Require medical insurance companies to cover sexual assault treatments in full.

Sexual assault survivors currently have to pay $1,000 on average for medical costs associated with their trauma. This is completely unacceptable. Sexual assault isn’t something rare, some studies estimate it happens to as many as one in every four women at some point throughout their lives. That’s to say nothing of all the men and boys who are assaulted sexually every single day. Rape is known to be greatly under-reported, and making it easier for the victim to come forward would help with that immensely. No one should have to pay to be cruelly attacked, and that is just what’s happening.

Insurance companies are known to gouge people in any way possible, but this is low even for them. No one but the perpetrator should be punished financially or otherwise. It’s already well known that survivors are re-victimized at every turn, from the medical exam room to the court system, and then finally the court of public opinion. Victims are not going to be in a position to fight with their health insurance providers on this issue, and they shouldn’t have to in the first place. Please sign this petition to stop insurance companies from charging rape victims for their healthcare.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Whitehouse,

It’s estimated that an American citizen is sexually assaulted almost every minute of the day. A disproportionate amount of these victims are women and minorities. Currently, insurance companies are not prevented from charging them for services, and they are taking advantage of that oversight. Victims have already been taken advantage of enough, they shouldn’t have to pay for anything related to their attack. Rape victims pay an average of $1000 toward their post-assault medical care.

Insurance companies should not be allowed to charge the victim of a crime for care needed as a result of that crime. No one should hesitate to report a crime because of the costs they may incur. Rape kits are required to be free, but often the hospitals will bill victims for other associated tests or procedures they conduct. Please put an end to this immoral practice.

Sincerely,
